It would be ‘unbelievable’ if Newcastle United could land Harry Kane, Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.
The lowdown
Transfer insider Jones told the media outlet earlier this month that he expects Newcastle to pursue moves which would previously have been considered ‘unthinkable’, saying that he was ‘hearing’ that the Magpies could launch a move for the Tottenham striker.
Kane is the highest-placed active player on the Premier League’s all-time top scorer list with 173 goals, which ranks him seventh, with Frank Lampard (177) and Thierry Henry (175) both in his sights. He has won the division’s Golden Boot award on three separate occasions and was also the top scorer at the 2018 World Cup.
Kane produced what The Times’ Henry Winter called ‘one of the finest individual performances’ in the top flight this season against reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday, with the second of his two goals snatching three points for his team in the 95th minute.
The latest
Jones says that Kane would be an incredible signing for Newcastle and, while any deal may seem unrealistic at this moment, it should not be completely ruled out.
The journalist gushed: “Harry Kane, obviously, would be an unbelievable get. It seems undoable right now, but things can quickly turn and you never know.”
The verdict
The £90m-rated hitman Kane may not be willing to join Newcastle this summer, when the Magpies may have only just scraped Premier League survival, but it could be a viable move in the long-term.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein wrote on Monday that, should Daniel Levy refuse to entertain the sale of Kane this summer as he did in 2021, the England captain could consider running down his £200,000-per-week contract.
That would enable him to leave on a free transfer in 2024, by which point Newcastle may be entering into the European picture, if the ambitions of their owners are realised.
Kane is yet to win a major trophy during his career, and he may see joining the mega-rich Toon as an avenue towards ending that drought.
