It’s fair to say that this has been an underwhelming season for Tottenham.
Before the Watford game, Spurs were eighth in the table, and despite bringing Jose Mourinho through the door, their fortunes haven’t changed as they’ve failed to win any of their last four games.
The decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino was controversial at the time as Spurs fans weren’t best pleased with the news, and one pundit believes that Daniel Levy’s decision hasn’t paid off.
What’s been said then?
The former Arsenal player was discussing Spurs ahead of their clash with Watford.
“I worry for Tottenham. Mourinho came in and they were 11 points behind, now he’s been there for quite a while now, and they’re nine points behind with a lot of games being eaten up.” Merson said on Sky Sports’ Gilette Soccer Saturday: Build Up (18/1/20 12:10pm).

“For me, this is a big gamble that looks like it’s gone wrong in my opinion. This appointment was all made for top four.
“When people say ‘he was brought in to win a trophy’, no he was brought in to get top four because that’s a lorry-load of money they’re missing out on next season.”
Could still work out
It’s a bit early in the Portuguese manager’s tenure to say that this is a gamble that hasn’t worked out.
Ok, Spurs don’t look likely to land a Champions League spot, but if we’re being fair, it was always going to be tough after Pochettino’s poor start to the campaign. When he left, Spurs were 14th in the table and although there’s been an improvement, their league position still hasn’t improved a great deal.
Add into that the fact that Harry Kane has suffered with injuries, and it’s almost an impossible task for Mourinho to get Spurs into the Champions League.
However, if he wins some silverware this term he’s already improved on his predecessor’s haul at the club. While Merson doesn’t think that’s important, football is about much more than just financial incentives, and winning the FA Cup or Champions League would be a huge boost for a team that hasn’t won a major honour in over a decade.
In other news, Spurs have been urged to sign one man by a former player.
