da fezbet: According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arsenal are looking to complete a loan swoop for Southampton defender Cedric.
What’s the word?
The Gunners have something of an injury crisis at the back, with the likes of Calum Chambers, Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney all out of action at the moment. Not to mention, first-choice right-back Hector Bellerin has only recently returned to first-team football.

The north London side completed a loan deal for Flamengo ace Pablo Mari earlier in the week, and according to Ornstein, they are looking to do the same for Cedric. The journalist claims the move will likely be a loan until the end of the season, and will put the Gunners in “pole position” to sign the Portugal international on a permanent basis in the summer when he becomes a free agent.
Masterstroke
After spending lavishly last summer on the likes of William Saliba and Nicolas Pepe – the latter of course being a club-record signing – finances are unsurprisingly a lot tighter this month at the Emirates. As a result, the Gunners have appeared to be shopping in the loan market in this January transfer window, and if they can get a deal over the line for Cedric, they will have completed yet another business masterstroke.
Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Arsenal’s history in the January transfer window?
In the Pepe transfer, it was reported that the Gunners did not pay the full £72m up front, but rather Raul Sanllehi negotiated a deal where they could pay it in instalments. The Spaniard showed a business savvy in ensuring Arsenal got the best possible deal. And in potentially getting both Mari and Cedric on loan, with no obligation to buy, he has given the north London side a get-out clause if the pair don’t end up working out.
Arsenal need to be savvy about their money. And the loan to sign Cedric is yet another sign they are being exactly that.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s swoop for Pablo Mari can help unlock the true potential of this Arsene Wenger signing.
